Civil Nuclear Constabulary Welcomes New Graduates of Authorised Firearms Officer Programme
The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) celebrated the graduation of Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs) from the Initial Foundation Programme (IFP) 106 with two ceremonial passing out parades held in Cumbria and Oxfordshire. The graduating class has successfully navigated a rigorous 19-week training course designed to prepare them for their vital roles in maintaining safety and security within the UK’s civil nuclear industry.
Details of the Programme
The initial training consisted of a comprehensive residential curriculum focusing on policing skills and firearms proficiency. The programme aimed to equip the new officers with essential knowledge and competencies necessary for effective performance as AFOs. Participants hailed from diverse professional backgrounds, including prior experience in Home Office policing and military service.
Recognition and Achievements
Family, friends, and CNC representatives gathered to acknowledge the dedication and accomplishments of the new officers, who had successfully completed numerous assessments throughout their training. Assistant Chief Constable Kerry Smith, who hosted the graduation ceremony in Cumbria, reflected on the significant transformations the officers underwent in the course of their training. “From those who had never handled a firearm before to now being highly skilled professionals, their growth has been remarkable,” she stated.
Future Training and Development
Although graduates are now being deployed to Operational Policing Units (OPUs) throughout England and Scotland, their journey of learning and professional growth continues. Officers stationed in England will engage in the CNC’s Non-Home Office Police Officer Apprenticeship (NHOPOA) programme, where they will work towards achieving their End Point Assessment (EPA) over the next two years. Successful completion of the EPA will lead to formal accreditation and a recommendation for rank confirmation following the probationary period.
Continuous Education and Career Advancement
In addition to their ongoing training, all AFOs will be required to undergo regular fitness evaluations to maintain their readiness. Some officers are expected to pursue advancement opportunities within the organisation or apply for specialised positions, such as National Firearms Instructor, Police Medic, or Police Dog Handler, each necessitating additional training.
Background
The CNC plays a strategic role in safeguarding the UK’s civil nuclear sector, employing professionals who are highly trained to address security challenges. The enhancement of skills among officers is instrumental in ensuring that the CNC can effectively fulfil its mission to protect the public and the nation’s nuclear facilities.
