Transformational Review of Military Accommodation Launched
An independent review aimed at overhauling living conditions for approximately 80,000 military personnel in single and unaccompanied accommodations has been officially launched. This initiative comes in response to extensive feedback indicating that many living quarters have become outdated and do not meet the needs of modern service life.
Government Response to Armed Forces Housing Concerns
The Single Living Accommodation (SLA) and Overseas Estate Review was unveiled today by the Minister for Veterans and People at RAF Brize Norton. This review addresses longstanding issues related to accommodation standards, which have been exacerbated by years of insufficient investment. The aim is to enhance the morale and retention of Armed Forces personnel, which has reportedly been impacted by subpar living conditions.
Investment in Military Housing
The initiative is supported by a significant financial commitment of £9.2 billion through the Defence Housing Strategy, which aims to upgrade over 40,000 service family homes. Aiming to prioritise personnel welfare, the Armed Forces Bill is also set to establish a new Defence Housing Service dedicated to enhancing living standards.
Already, maintenance efforts on single living accommodations have been substantial, with over 614,000 requests for repairs attended to in the past three years. This included approximately 38,000 issues related to heating and hot water, with a high success rate of 95% within targeted timelines. A total of £244 million has been allocated for improvement work within this timeframe. The review will assess where further expenditure is most critical.
Commitment to Improvement
Louise Sandher-Jones, Minister for Veterans and People, remarked on the quality of accommodation, stating that many service personnel live in conditions that fall short of acceptable standards. She emphasised that this review represents a pivotal moment in recognising and addressing the diverse accommodation needs of military personnel throughout their careers.
The review will actively involve service personnel by incorporating their perspectives through site visits and engaging sessions. This approach ensures that the lived experiences of those serving in the Armed Forces directly influence the recommendations made.
Leadership and Future Steps
At the helm of the review is Natalie Elphicke Ross OBE, who spearheaded the Defence Housing Strategy in November 2025. She leads an expert panel that will produce recommendations in two phases—focusing on UK accommodations by Summer 2026 and overseas sites by the end of that year.
Elphicke Ross emphasised the necessity for top-quality accommodation to support the crucial work of the Armed Forces. She noted that the review will explore methods to enhance both barracks and overseas housing conditions, ultimately aiming to improve retention and the overall experience for serving personnel.
Conclusion
The overarching goal of this review and accompanying Housing Bill is to establish a new standard for military accommodations, reflecting a commitment to improving living conditions for all personnel, be they single or part of a family unit.
