State-of-the-Art Facilities Unveiled at MOD Lyneham for Armed Forces Training
MOD Lyneham is set to enhance its training capabilities for armed forces personnel with the introduction of advanced technical training facilities and new accommodation blocks. This initiative follows the completion of a substantial £82 million project, which sees RAF No 4 School of Technical Training relocating from MOD St Athan in South Wales.
New Facilities and Infrastructure
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has officially transferred the newly constructed facilities, executed by Kier Construction Western & Wales in collaboration with Mott MacDonald as the Technical Service Provider. Among the upgrades are three blocks of Single Living Accommodation, which offer 96 beds for trainees and an additional 72 beds designated for permanent staff and RAF members engaged in specialist training.
In addition to the accommodation, the technical building consists of classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and office spaces, designed to provide a comprehensive learning environment for personnel.
Energy Resilience and Community Support
As part of the project, a solar farm with a capacity of 2.5MVA and a battery storage system will be established to ensure energy resilience, granting self-sufficiency to the new facilities. This project not only aims to serve military personnel but also supports the local community by creating a more inclusive environment at the MOD Lyneham Community Centre.
The construction work has resulted in the creation of approximately 19 new job opportunities, contributing positively to the local economy.
Statements from Project Leaders
Cibin Elias, Project Manager at the DIO, expressed satisfaction with the successful delivery of these cutting-edge training facilities, highlighting their significance for the ongoing development of armed forces personnel.
These buildings will support the vital work of training our armed forces personnel for decades to come.
Meanwhile, Wing Commander Chris Long, CUBIT Project Manager, underlined the importance of these facilities for RAF Ground Engineer training, noting that outfitting work is currently in progress, with the facility expected to open in 2026.
Work is now underway to fit out the training facility, which will open in 2026 and provide 4SoTT with modern, purpose-built infrastructure.
Jason Taylor, Regional Director for Kier Construction, spoke about the ongoing collaboration with the DIO, emphasizing their commitment to delivering high-quality environments to meet the needs of trainees and permanent staff.
We are proud to continue our strong relationship with the DIO on this project.
