The NHS is set to enhance its app to facilitate faster video consultations for men exhibiting symptoms of prostate cancer. The New Online Hospital Concept
This video consultation service is part of the government’s initiative, termed a new “online hospital”, which encompasses significant upgrades to the existing NHS app. The service is expected to launch next year and will initially focus on conditions including prostate enlargement and elevated prostate specific antigen levels—indicators of potential prostate cancer.
Broader Service Offerings
In addition to prostate-related concerns, the upgraded service will cater to various women’s health issues such as severe menopausal symptoms, endometriosis, and fibroids. It will also address eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, along with management for those suffering from iron deficiency anaemia and inflammatory bowel disease.
Patients referred by their GPs will be able to utilise the app for video consultations with medical professionals throughout England. This approach aims to reduce the need for physical visits to clinics, allowing for timely responses from healthcare providers.

Officials are optimistic that this new initiative will help alleviate the current waiting lists, enabling patients to connect with doctors from the comfort of their homes. Should they prefer, individuals still have the option to wait for in-person consultations as needed.
While video consultations will enhance access, traditional tests, scans, and procedures will continue at local health facilities to ensure ongoing, comprehensive care. Patients can also benefit from continuous monitoring via the app.
