Nursery Worker Admits to Multiple Sexual Offences Against Children
A 45-year-old nursery worker from Finchley has admitted to 26 grave sexual offences against children, following a lengthy and disturbing investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Vincent Chan was employed at a nursery in North London from 2017 until 2024, during which time he committed numerous acts of abuse.
Charges and Offences
The charges against Chan are extensive and include:
- Five counts of sexual assault of a child by penetration
- Four counts of sexual assault of a child by touching
- Eleven counts of taking indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child
- Six counts of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child
These offences spanned various categories, with category A images representing the most severe cases of abuse.
Discovery and Arrest
The investigation began when a colleague reported Chan for inappropriately filming a child asleep in their food with a nursery-issued device, an act he reportedly edited with music for comic effect and shared with coworkers. This led to his arrest in June 2024 amid suspicions of neglect. Police confiscated 25 digital devices from Chan’s home and three from the nursery.
Although he was released on bail, Chan was dismissed from his position, and the nursery has since shut down. Following a forensic analysis of his devices completed in July 2025, police discovered a significant number of indecent images and videos of minors, as well as corroborative evidence of contact sexual offences.
Recent Developments
Chan was re-arrested in September this year on charges relating to sexual offences against children. Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, who oversaw the investigation, described the case as one of the most disturbing in recent memory, highlighting the calculated nature of Chan’s abuse. He noted that Chan had exploited environments that were supposed to be safe spaces for children, violating the trust of both families and the community.
Detective Chief Inspector Basford praised the staff member who initially raised concerns, stating that their vigilance was crucial in preventing further abuse that could have endangered additional children.
Background
Child sexual abuse is a pressing issue in the UK, and cases like Chan’s underscore the importance of rigorous safeguarding in educational and childcare settings. The investigation into Chan highlights not only individual accountability but also the need for robust mechanisms for reporting and addressing such allegations to protect vulnerable children.
