Police Scotland Urged to Reopen Investigation into Mohamed al Fayed
Calls are growing for Police Scotland to revisit its investigation into the late Mohamed al Fayed, former owner of Harrods, following more than 400 allegations of sexual misconduct reported against him. Al Fayed passed away in 2023 at the age of 94, and concerns about the handling of these accusations have been raised in Parliament.
New Parliamentary Inquiry Launched
In response to ongoing investigations by the Metropolitan Police into allegations against the businessman, a cross-party parliamentary group (APPG) has been established. This group aims to ensure proper oversight of the Metropolitan Police’s inquiries and advocates for a comprehensive examination of the allegations against al Fayed.
Pressure on Police Scotland
The co-chairs of the APPG, Wendy Chamberlain, a member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and a former police officer, alongside Labour MP Dave Robertson, have reached out to Scotland’s Chief Constable, Jo Farrell. In their correspondence, they highlighted the previous closure of a police investigation into a rape allegation at al Fayed’s estate in the Highlands. They urged the Chief Constable to consider reopening the case, particularly given the new information surfacing from the Metropolitan Police.
In their letter, the APPG stated, “While we acknowledge that your investigation was closed, we ask if you are reviewing the situation given the current inquiries and the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s interest in prior complaints.” They further implored the police to evaluate the merits of restarting their investigation into al Fayed’s conduct.
The Scale of the Allegations
The APPG remarked on the extensive nature of the allegations, stating, “The scale of the offences attributed to al Fayed is vast,” and noted that over 400 individuals have come forward with their experiences. They expressed concern over the long timeline of allegations, dating back to 1977, and the international scope, citing possible trafficking and abuse charges that could have occurred in Scotland.
Police Scotland has acknowledged the APPG’s letter and has committed to providing a response in due course.
Harrods’ Support for Survivors
A spokesperson for Harrods has voiced support for all survivors who have come forward, emphasizing the importance of their testimonies. The company continues to encourage individuals to utilize its redress scheme, which allows claims for compensation until 31 March 2026 while also offering access to counselling and advocacy services.
Harrods has urged survivors to explore all available avenues for seeking justice, whether through law enforcement or the Fayed estate.
