A court hearing has unveiled a disturbing case involving a prison officer, Charlotte Winstanley, who maintained a three-year romantic relationship with inmate Jabhari Blair. Sheffield Crown Court heard how the couple used the mobile phone to send intimate images and messages, with revelations that they regarded Mondays as their “date nights.” Among the various texts, Winstanley expressed a desire to have children with Blair, stating, “I’m literally praying to have your babies.” The messages depicted a troubling blend of professional misconduct and personal entanglement.
The evidence of their relationship also included security footage capturing moments of intimacy and the two of them disappearing into private areas of the prison. Prosecutor Aaron Dinnes highlighted that Winstanley acted as Blair’s “link to the outside world,” conveying confidential information about prison movements and facilitating personal interactions with his family.
Criminal Background of the Inmate
Blair, 30, has a violent criminal record and is serving a sentence for gang-related activities. The court was informed that Winstanley, who began her career as a prison officer in April 2022 after completing training that included protocols against inappropriate relationships, provided Blair with assistance beyond the confines of prison life, including visiting his mother in Leeds.

Judge Jeremy Richardson KC described the situation as potentially the most severe case of misconduct he has encountered, emphasizing the gravity of Winstanley’s actions over an extended period. During the hearing, he expressed apprehension about rushing to judgement and promised to consider the case further before delivering a sentence on Monday.
Winstanley was visibly emotional in the dock, particularly as the judge underlined the seriousness of engaging in a sexual relationship with an inmate while also participating in the smuggling of contraband items. Blair was noted to have “corrupted” the officer in a situation deemed “about as bad as it gets.”
