Report Reveals Harm Caused by Former GOSH Surgeon
A recent report on Yaser Jabbar, a former surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), has identified that 94 children suffered harm during his tenure. The findings have reignited concerns regarding patient care and trust within one of the UK’s leading children’s hospitals.

The report, released by GOSH on Thursday, examined 789 cases handled by Jabbar over five years, following allegations regarding his clinical practice. It revealed that, while most children did not experience adverse effects, a total of 98 patients, representing 12.4%, did encounter some form of harm. Out of these, 94 incidents were directly linked to Jabbar’s actions.
The analysis categorized the harm into various degrees, with examples ranging from mild issues, such as unnecessary exposure to general anaesthesia, to severe cases involving significant delays in diagnosing complications or ineffective surgery outcomes. Notably, 36 children were reported to have suffered severe harm during their treatment.
Incomplete Records and Legal Actions
In certain instances, the review was hindered by incomplete patient documentation, complicating the ability to draw definitive conclusions. Moreover, a small fraction of the harm observed was attributed to factors unrelated to Jabbar’s practise, such as administrative mishaps or errors from other medical personnel.
In the wake of these revelations, numerous families have initiated legal action against the hospital, although current reports indicate that there is no ongoing criminal investigation into Jabbar. The surgeon voluntarily relinquished his medical licence in January 2024 and is believed to be living abroad.
Response from Hospital Executives
Mat Shaw, the chief executive of GOSH, expressed deep regret for the distress caused to affected families. He stated, “What has happened to these children at this hospital is unacceptable and it is awful.” Shaw acknowledged the breaking of trust that occurred during Jabbar’s practice, reiterating that the hospital has taken the matter with utmost seriousness.
