Survey Reveals Most Disappointing Christmas Gifts in the UK
A recent survey conducted by Which? has highlighted the most lacklustre Christmas presents received by UK residents in 2024, bringing to light some truly eccentric choices. Among the gifts, used pyjamas and spoiled fruit have emerged as frontrunners in the lack of enthusiasm department.
Survey Insights and Unforgettable Gifts
The survey engaged over 2,000 participants in January 2025, focusing on the gifts they received during the festive season and the most unsatisfactory gifts they have encountered over time. Notable mentions included not only the infamous used pyjamas but also a rancid coconut, a pineapple, and even marmite-scented deodorant. One respondent received a helicopter ride as a gift from their daughter, despite their well-known fear of flying and vertigo.
Gift Statistics and Trends
According to Which?, around 20% of respondents reported receiving gifts that did not meet their expectations or were unsuitable for them. When queried about their actions regarding these unwanted items, the findings revealed that:
- 33% chose to keep the gift and use it.
- 15% opted to keep the gift but had no intention of using it.
- 34% managed to dispose of the gift, with 12% gifting it to someone else, 11% donating it to charity, and 8% selling it online.
Returning Unwanted Gifts
Nearly half of those who tried to return their gifts faced difficulties, as pointed out by Lisa Webb, a consumer law expert. She noted, “It’s hard to imagine a more disappointing present than used pyjamas or rotten fruit, yet many of us have been left pondering what to do with an unwanted gift.”
Webb emphasised the importance of including a gift receipt to allow recipients the flexibility to return items if necessary. Furthermore, she explained that in many cases, only the original buyer can initiate a refund or exchange, although items bought as gifts may qualify for returns under specific retailer policies.
Background
The holiday season often brings with it a mix of joy and potential disappointment, especially when it comes to gift exchanges. While many individuals aim to find the perfect gift, others may struggle to pick items that truly resonate with the recipient’s preferences. This survey sheds light on the reasons behind such gifting mishaps, providing insight into consumer behaviours around the festive period.
