RYA SafeTrx App to Cease Operations from 31 December
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has announced the discontinuation of the RYA SafeTrx vessel tracking and safety communications platform, effective from 31 December. This decision follows discussions with HM Coastguard, attributing the cessation to advancements in technology since the app’s launch.
Safety Measures Remain in Place
Despite the closure of RYA SafeTrx, HM Coastguard will continue to operate its search and rescue services alongside existing safety protocols, equipment, and resources. Authorities have reiterated the importance of being prepared when navigating the waters.
Recommendations for Water Users
To ensure safety on the water, users are advised to take the following precautions:
- Maintain reliable communication capabilities, such as a VHF/DSC radio, a personal locator beacon, or a mobile phone kept in a waterproof pouch.
- Inform someone on land about your travel plans and expected return times; if you are delayed, they can contact emergency services by calling 999 and requesting the Coastguard.
- Always wear a personal flotation device, like a lifejacket, and routinely inspect both your personal and onboard equipment.
Data Transition to HM Coastguard
In a collaborative effort, the RYA and HM Coastguard will transfer the data originally collected through RYA SafeTrx to a secure database managed by HM Coastguard. Users wishing to opt out of this transfer must delete their accounts before the platform shuts down of 31 December 2025. After this date, users can still manage their data by contacting HM Coastguard via email.
Statements from Officials
Mel Hide, RYA Director of External Affairs, expressed understanding of the disappointment felt by app users regarding the ending of the tracking service. However, she highlighted that the transfer of ownership and vessel data to HM Coastguard will ensure its continued availability in emergencies.
Assistant Chief Coastguard Matt Leat reassured water users that the transition would not compromise HM Coastguard’s ability to manage emergencies or rescue efforts. He reiterated the commitment to public safety, urging boaters to carry essential safety equipment and have reliable communication tools available.
