Deadly Drone Strike Claims Lives of Displaced Families in Sudan
A recent drone strike in Sudan has left 24 individuals dead, including eight children, as reported by a local doctors’ network. The attack involved the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and targeted a vehicle transporting displaced families in North Kordofan province on Saturday.
Details of the Attack
The Sudan Doctors Network detailed that among the casualties were two infants, with several others sustaining injuries. The attack occurred near the city of Rahad, an area grappling with a severe shortage of medical supplies. The vehicle was reportedly carrying individuals who had fled from violence in the Dubeiker region.
This drone strike follows closely on the heels of another violent incident, where a World Food Programme aid convoy was attacked, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
Calls for International Action
The physicians’ group has urged international organisations and the global community to “take immediate action” to safeguard civilians and to hold the RSF accountable for their actions. As of now, there has been no response from the RSF, which has been engaged in ongoing conflict with the Sudanese military for control over the country for nearly three years.
Background
This recent violence is part of a larger conflict that has seen the country embroiled in civil strife since early 2023. The ongoing power struggle in Sudan has led to the deaths of at least 40,000 individuals, according to United Nations estimates, and has displaced more than 14 million people. The humanitarian crisis has also triggered outbreaks of disease and has pushed parts of the country towards famine.
The situation in Sudan carries significant implications, both regionally and globally. As humanitarian conditions worsen, the international community’s response will be crucial in determining the fate of millions affected by the ongoing conflict.
