Swiss Bar Owner Released on Bail After Tragic Fire
The co-owner of a Swiss bar, where a devastating fire claimed the lives of 40 individuals, has been granted bail following his arrest on 9 January. Jacques Moretti, along with his wife Jessica, is facing serious charges related to the incident that occurred on New Year’s Day.
Court Proceedings and Conditions of Release
A court had previously ordered Moretti to remain in custody for three months, citing concerns regarding his potential flight risk unless adequate security measures were in place. However, the court has now allowed his release under specific conditions: he must remain in Switzerland, surrender his identification documents, and report to authorities daily. The bail set at 200,000 Swiss francs (approximately £190,000) was successfully paid.
Earlier this month, Jessica Moretti was placed under house arrest as part of the ongoing investigation. Both individuals are under suspicion for negligent homicide, negligent bodily injury, and causing a fire through negligence.
Criminal Investigation Continues
Following his release, a lawyer representing the couple stated that they would comply with all requests from authorities and expressed their ongoing thoughts with the victims of this tragic incident.
Over 100 individuals sustained injuries from the fire, and many survivors remain hospitalized with severe injuries. Prosecutors have been actively questioning the Morettis about safety protocols and renovation work at the bar.
Background
The fire is believed to have originated from decorative candles that ignited soundproofing material on the bar’s ceiling. Alarmingly, local officials have revealed that Le Constellation had not undergone a fire safety inspection since 2019, raising significant concerns about compliance with safety regulations.
This incident highlights ongoing issues surrounding public safety standards in hospitality venues, a matter that resonates globally as establishments strive to ensure the safety of their patrons.
