Groundbreaking Aircraft Deals Secure UK Jobs and Economic Growth
A significant boost to the UK aerospace industry has emerged from the Dubai Airshow, where several airlines, including Etihad, Emirates, and FlyDubai, announced substantial orders for Airbus aircraft. These multi-billion-pound deals are expected to preserve thousands of jobs across the UK, notably in manufacturing hubs such as Derby, Bristol, and North Wales.
Major Aircraft Orders
At the forefront of these developments, FlyDubai has agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for 150 A321neo aircraft, marking its entry as a new customer for the aircraft manufacturer. Likewise, Emirates has confirmed additional orders for eight Airbus A350-900 aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB84 engines, bringing its total A350-900 fleet to 73 when all units are delivered.
In addition, Etihad Airways will be expanding its widebody fleet by placing a firm order for six A330-900 aircraft and seven additional A350-1000s. With this agreement, Etihad’s order for A350s will reach 27 units. Ethiopian Airlines has also committed to six A350-900 aircraft, solidifying its status as Africa’s largest A350 customer.
Impact on UK Economy
The current orders signify a strong affirmation of the UK’s modern Industrial Strategy and the aerospace sector’s role in economic growth. Trade Minister Chris Bryant emphasised the potential of these orders to sustain around 30,000 skilled jobs within the UK, highlighting their significance not only for large manufacturers like Airbus and Rolls-Royce but also for the myriad of small businesses in the supply chain.
In a complementary move to bolster economic ties with the UAE, UK Export Finance has initiated plans to provide up to $3.5 billion in financing to support British firms aiming to secure contracts for the ambitious $35 billion Al Maktoum International Airport project in Dubai. This project is envisaged to be the largest airport globally by passenger capacity and scale.
Trade Relations with UAE
The escalating collaboration between the UK and the UAE, a G20 partner, was evident at the airshow, underscored by record bilateral trade reaching £24.8 billion in the previous year. The UK is seeing significant export opportunities, with over 14,000 British companies currently trading with the UAE.
Quotes from Trade Minister
Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant commented on the occasion, stating, “It was inspiring to see so many British businesses touting for massive deals at the Dubai Airshow this week. These are big wins for the UK and a major vote of confidence in great British manufacturing… We’re bolstering our support for the aerospace industry through our modern Industrial Strategy.”
