UK and Bahrain Strengthen Ties in Strategic Dialogue
On 24 November 2025, UK Foreign Secretary and Minister Falconer convened with H.E. Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain’s Foreign Affairs Minister, for the second round of the UK-Bahrain Strategic Dialogue in London. This meeting highlighted the robust strategic partnership between the two nations, emphasising shared values and collaborative interests.
Investment and Defence Cooperation
During their discussions, both officials reviewed the outcomes of HRH Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s visit to the UK in June 2025, which included the establishment of a second Strategic Investment and Collaboration Partnership. This agreement promises an additional £2 billion investment from Bahrain into the UK, signifying strong economic ties.
The Ministers also welcomed the UK’s membership in the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA), along with the signing of a new Defence Cooperation Agreement. These efforts are designed to bolster regional security and enhance interoperability, particularly through the first trilateral C-SIPA Defence Working Group involving the UK, Bahrain, and the United States. The group has proposed the formation of a technical implementation team to explore cooperative areas, notably in maritime, cyber, and air defence, with the UK slated to host the next meeting in 2026.
Commitment to Future Collaboration
Looking ahead, the meeting underscored the mutual commitment to fostering growth and security. Major focal points include the green transition, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and tourism.
In addition, there was a reaffirmation of dedication to concluding the United Kingdom–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which reflect the deep-rooted strategic relationship and economic interactions between the UK and Gulf nations.
International Cooperation and Global Issues
The discussion also touched upon Bahrain’s impending term on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2026–2027. Both parties explored avenues for cooperation aimed at promoting international peace and security, agreeing to collaborate closely on UNSC affairs and signing a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise their commitment.
The dialogue also addressed pressing global challenges. On the issue concerning Gaza, the Ministers expressed support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 and voiced their endorsement of President Trump’s peace initiative for the region. They reiterated the essential need for enhanced humanitarian access while reaffirming their commitment to a two-state solution that ensures justice and security for both Palestinians and Israelis.
On the situation in Ukraine, the Ministers acknowledged the need for a just and sustainable peace in line with United Nations Charter principles. They collectively agreed on supporting efforts to alleviate the humanitarian and economic repercussions of the ongoing conflict.
Moreover, the Ministers voiced deep concern over recent atrocities in Sudan, particularly in Darfur. They called for immediate action to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and emphasized the necessity of safe humanitarian access amidst ongoing hostilities.
Conclusion
The meeting concluded with mutual expressions of appreciation for the advancement in bilateral relations, accompanied by a commitment to continuous high-level engagement to further shared strategic interests.
