UK Deepens Security Cooperation with Ecuador to Combat Cocaine Trade
The UK is enhancing its collaboration with Ecuador in an effort to tackle the cocaine trade that significantly impacts both nations, as confirmed by Minister for Latin America Chris Elmore during his inaugural visit to the country. The visit aims to strengthen security ties and disrupt the flow of illicit drugs, primarily produced in South America, which often transit through Ecuadorian ports.
Efforts Against Organised Crime
During his visit, Minister Elmore highlighted that Ecuador serves as a crucial transit point for approximately 80% of cocaine destined for European markets, raising security concerns for both nations. The minister met with local police, who have benefitted from UK training and resources, to discuss strategies for combating organised crime. Elmore also observed training facilities for canine units, which play a vital role in detecting drugs.
In 2025, Ecuador experienced unprecedented levels of violence associated with gang activity, resulting in more than 10,000 gang-related fatalities. The increasing presence of criminal networks underscores the urgent need for joint action between the UK and Ecuador to ensure public safety and regional stability.
Investment in Innovation and Climate Initiatives
Elmore’s visit also focuses on UK-Ecuador collaboration in sectors beyond security. He plans to visit a water treatment plant developed by a Welsh firm, Hydro Industries, which is expected to achieve £100 million in business over the coming years. This project exemplifies the potential for British investment to contribute positively to Ecuador’s future.
Additionally, the Minister will engage in discussions surrounding climate resilience, particularly through partnerships in the Galapagos Islands, where UK leadership in environmental initiatives is being showcased.
Broader Context of the Visit
This visit comes amid geopolitical changes in the Latin American region, notably in Venezuela, where the UK is actively supporting efforts for a peaceful transition to a legitimate government. Ecuador remains one of the UK’s primary allies in Latin America, reinforcing the countries’ commitment to mutual interests, especially regarding organised crime and climate change.
Minister Elmore remarked on the vast scale of the cocaine trade, noting that last year alone, UK authorities seized over 28 tonnes of cocaine. He underscored the devastating impacts this illicit industry has on communities in both Ecuador and the UK, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to dismantle the criminal organisations perpetuating this cycle.
