UK Reaffirms Commitment to Colombia Peace Agreement Amid Rising Concerns
The United Kingdom has reiterated its support for the full implementation of Colombia’s 2016 Peace Agreement, urging the Colombian Government to utilize its remaining time in office to advance this crucial process. Concerns around security and the increasing risks of violence during upcoming elections have prompted calls for enhanced guarantees for a secure democratic environment.
Support for Peace and Transitional Justice
In a recent statement, the UK praised the efforts of the UN Mission in Colombia and its Special Representative, Jenča, for their continuous commitment to aiding the peace process. The UK Government stressed the importance of maintaining robust institutions that can ensure the implementation of the peace agreement’s provisions, particularly those concerning Transitional Justice and protections for Afro-Colombian and indigenous populations.
Prioritising Implementation Mechanisms
The peace agreement includes the establishment of the “Commission for the Follow-up, Promotion, and Verification of the Final Peace Agreement.” This commission plays a pivotal role, bringing together major stakeholders to tackle issues related to the agreement’s execution. The UK hopes for the swift establishment of new verification mechanisms for sanctions imposed by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace now that the UN’s verification role has concluded.
Concerns Over Upcoming Elections
With elections on the horizon, concerns have arisen regarding potential violence and intimidation that could disrupt the electoral process. The UK has urged the Colombian Government to reinforce security measures to safeguard a free and inclusive democratic experience, aligning with the commitments set out in the Final Agreement. Since the peace agreement’s signing, 487 former combatants have reportedly been killed, raising alarms about the safety of signatories and civilians alike.
Commitment to Colombia’s Path for Lasting Peace
As Colombia navigates these challenges, the UK has voiced its unwavering commitment to supporting the nation in its journey towards enduring peace. The UK Government looks forward to collaborating with Colombian authorities on various peace and security initiatives during its tenure on the Security Council.
