New Initiative Launched to Drive Investment in Scottish Cities
Business leaders, UK Government officials, and representatives from Scottish local authorities gathered on Tuesday, 20 January, to introduce a new programme aimed at enhancing investment across Scotland’s eight cities and their surrounding regions. Launched during Scottish Cities Week 2026, the Scotland Investment Acceleration Programme seeks to attract international investment and bolster local economic growth.
Collaboration for Economic Growth
The initiative was officially unveiled by Scotland Office Minister Kirsty McNeill at a joint event that included key stakeholders such as city leaders, investors, and experts from the finance sector, alongside officials from the Scotland Office and the Departments for Business and Trade. This collaborative effort, involving the UK Government, TheCityUK, and the Scottish Cities Alliance, is designed to provide essential support and guidance to local authorities in their pursuit of investment.
Minister McNeill remarked on the rich investment potential within Scotland’s cities and regions, citing the talent and resources necessary for growth. “This is about building a competitive advantage for Scotland,” she stated, emphasising the importance of preparing communities to secure investment that drives economic expansion and job creation.

Cllr Raymond Bremner, Chair of the Scottish Cities Alliance and Leader of Highland Council, expressed pride in supporting the new programme. He stressed the importance of collaboration among governments, investors, and city partners to unlock transformative investment opportunities. “We champion inclusive, sustainable growth and aim to showcase Scotland’s strengths in the global marketplace,” he added.

He reiterated his enthusiasm for the partnership with public sector bodies to stimulate investment, generate high-value employment, and maintain Scotland’s competitive edge internationally.
Programme Structure and Future Activities
The Scotland Investment Acceleration Programme will span the entirety of 2026, commencing with the inaugural Scottish Cities Week Round Table in London, followed by additional events in Scotland. The programme will feature:
- Workshops and webinars aimed at enhancing the knowledge of local authority leaders

- Guidance to strengthen investment propositions
- Networking and forums for sharing best practices
- Support for showcasing investment opportunities during major events
During the launch, Minister McNeill spotlighted the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy, a ten-year initiative aimed at facilitating private investment in sectors vital to economic growth. Recent funding schemes beneficial to Scotland, such as the £140 million Local Growth Fund and the £280 million Pride in Place Programme for improving deprived areas, were also highlighted.
Significance of Scottish Cities Week
Scottish Cities Week serves as the Scottish Cities Alliance’s flagship annual event targeting London-based investors and developers, aimed at presenting growth opportunities within Scotland’s urban areas. The discussions and collaborations fostered during this week are essential for building investor confidence and enhancing the region’s attractiveness for future investment.
