UK and Bangkok Forge Environmental Partnership to Combat Climate Challenges
The UK Government, represented by His Majesty’s Ambassador to Thailand, HE Mr Mark Gooding OBE, has formalised a new commitment with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) following the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) in Bangkok. This agreement aims to enhance collaboration on climate initiatives between Thailand and the UK, focusing on sustainable transport and urban development.
Strengthening Existing Ties
This LOI builds upon previous agreements and ongoing efforts, including the UK PACT programme, which has allocated up to £6 million specifically for projects that support Thailand’s climate objectives. The investment is directed towards crucial sectors such as sustainable transport and green finance, aligning with Thailand’s ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Collaborative Projects
The partnership is set to advance a range of collaborative initiatives, including:
- Enhancing transport policies and workforce development for electric mobility.
- Promoting transit-oriented development and active mobility.
- Reducing PM2.5 exposure using improved public transport routing.
- Investigating the implementation of congestion charging and low-emission zones.
The BMA has been actively pursuing the establishment of Low-Emission Zones (LEZ), which have demonstrated a promising initial reduction of PM2.5 pollution by 15.6% in central districts. Plans to expand these measures across Bangkok’s 50 districts by 2026 aim to further enhance air quality and public health.
Statements from Leadership
Ambassador Gooding remarked on the significance of this collaboration, emphasising the importance of co-creating solutions that tackle climate change and urbanisation. He stated, “By joining forces, we can accelerate progress towards net zero, improve air quality, and foster safer, greener cities for future generations.”
Governor Sittipunt echoed this sentiment, noting the importance of leveraging UK expertise to fast-track Bangkok’s journey towards net-zero emissions, ultimately improving the living conditions for all residents.
Tangible Benefits of the Partnership
The partnership is poised to deliver notable advantages, such as:
- Increased capacity for climate action and urban sustainability within Bangkok.
- Enhanced policy frameworks and technical know-how deriving from knowledge exchange.
- Expanded opportunities for investment, innovation, and job creation in green sectors.
- Improved road safety and public health for both residents and visitors.
This agreement is expected to bolster Thailand’s national climate objectives, while also aligning with the UK’s commitment to global climate leadership.
Future Cooperation
Discussions between the UK and BMA also covered various areas of potential collaboration, such as road safety measures and consular cooperation. Plans to improve road safety, focusing on motorcycle accidents, are a priority, especially considering the one million British tourists who visit Thailand each year.
The partnership reflects a shared vision of developing a sustainable and low-carbon future, with both parties looking to intensify their collaboration in the coming years.
