Chilly Conditions and Snow Forecasted for Late January in the UK
As January nears its end, meteorologists are warning of a potential drop in temperatures across the UK, raising the likelihood of snowfall in various regions. This comes as current weather patterns feature average temperatures and scattered showers this weekend.
Current Weather Outlook
This weekend, the Met Office reports that temperatures will typically range from 6°C to 10°C (about 43°F to 50°F), accompanied by showers on Saturday. Sunday is anticipated to be overcast and foggy, with rain expected to move in during the latter part of the day. Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick noted, “The rain will progress into southern England and Wales, and there is a chance it could become heavier at times.”
In contrast, while southeastern England, northwest Scotland, and Northern Ireland may enjoy brief sunny periods, overall temperatures in these areas are projected to be cooler, falling between 2°C and 6°C (35.6°F to 43°F).
Forecast for Late January
Looking ahead, there is an increased possibility of colder weather later in the month, potentially leading to snowfall in several parts of the country. According to the Met Office’s updated forecast, starting Thursday, 22 January, the UK will experience a struggle between incoming Atlantic weather fronts and advancing colder conditions from the east.
Initially, milder air will dominate, leading to cloudy skies and intermittent showers, but as conditions shift, a colder trend may prevail. The Met Office has indicated, “This forecast remains somewhat uncertain, but the anticipated shift to chillier weather enhances the likelihood of snow across portions of the UK.”
Looking Ahead to February
As February approaches, people should prepare for an increased risk of cold weather and the associated wintry hazards that come with it.
Background
This warning comes shortly after the UK was severely impacted by Storm Goretti, described by the Met Office as a “multi-hazard event.” The storm produced winds exceeding 100mph, resulting in a rare red warning for dangerous conditions in southwest England. Tragically, a man in his 50s was found deceased in a caravan that was crushed by a falling tree in Helston, Cornwall. The storm led to the cancellation of flights, disruptions to train services, and closures of numerous schools due to adverse weather conditions.
Weather patterns are currently being closely monitored as citizens brace themselves for another potentially challenging winter spell in the UK.
