Anthony Joshua Mourns Loss of Friends in Tragic Car Crash
Anthony Joshua has expressed his grief over the death of two close friends who were killed in a car accident in Nigeria last year. The incident occurred on December 29 and involved the boxer, who narrowly escaped serious injury, leading to an emotional tribute shared via social media.
The Incident
The former world champion was travelling in a black SUV when it collided with a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos. The crash resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele, a longtime friend and personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, who had been a part of Joshua’s support team for over a decade as a strength and conditioning coach.
In a heartfelt video, the 36-year-old boxer described Ayodele and Ghami as “my left and my right,” revealing that this incident has profoundly affected him. “We went back home, went to see our families and everything just got flipped upside on its head,” Joshua said, recounting the emotional turmoil following their deaths.
Emotional Tribute
Joshua elaborated on the emotional significance of his friends, referring to them as “my brothers.” He acknowledged having experienced loss before, but emphasized that this was different: “It’s tough. It’s really tough.” He noted that their absence left a void not just for him but for their families and communities as well.
Joshua praised the impact Ghami and Ayodele had on his life, saying, “They were very important team members, very important friends and two of my brothers.” He also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support following the tragic event, emphasizing the character and legacy his friends built over the years.
Legal Developments
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, aged 46, has been charged with several offenses related to the crash, including driving without a valid license and negligent driving that led to the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami. Kayode appeared in court earlier this month, and the case has been adjourned until February 25 at the request of the prosecution.
Background
Prior to this tragedy, Joshua had celebrated a notable victory on December 19 against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, marking a significant moment in his boxing career. The loss of his friends, however, overshadowed this achievement, leaving the boxer to navigate a time of profound grief.
As the community continues to mourn the loss of two influential figures, Joshua has pledged to support their families and honour their legacies. “My goal is to continue to help them achieve their goals,” he remarked, underlining his commitment to their memory.
