A man has received a 12-year prison sentence following a brutal attack on two fellow passengers aboard a train. Thomas Craig, aged 48, was found guilty of attempted murder and assault after an incident that unfolded on 16 February 2024.

The altercation began when a seemingly intoxicated Craig initiated conversation with other passengers. Within a short time frame, he hurled insults at one victim, then violently struck him on two occasions with a glass bottle. When the first victim attempted to escape, Craig pursued him, continuing the attack until the bottle shattered into sharp pieces.
During the chaos, a friend of the initial victim stepped in to assist and was also attacked by Craig, who punched him multiple times before stabbing him with the broken bottle. The second victim suffered severe injuries, including a stab wound near his heart and a collapsed lung, necessitating immediate medical intervention.

Judge Lord Arthurson condemned the attack as appalling and emphasized that the public should be able to use transport services without fear. He characterized the assault on the second victim as “a wholly murderous attack.”

Following the attack, Craig returned to his seat, disposed of the broken bottle neck, and even took one of the victims’ mobile phones before changing his bloodstained clothing. Authorities apprehended Craig after the train arrived at Larbert railway station, where both victims received urgent medical care.
