Weather Outlook: Milder Days Ahead Amidst Winter Warnings
The UK is set to experience milder weather in the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach double digits Celsius in certain regions starting Sunday. In fact, some areas could see temperatures even higher than those forecast for Madrid, which is anticipated to remain around 8°C.
However, this positive forecast comes alongside warnings for snow, ice, strong winds, and rain across various parts of the country as the effects of Storm Goretti continue to be felt. The storm previously brought gusts nearing 100 mph and resulted in a rare red warning for “dangerous, stormy” winds, especially affecting the South West.
Forecast Temperatures
Predictions indicate that Plymouth will reach around 13°C on Sunday, followed by 12°C on Monday and 11°C on Tuesday. Meanwhile, London is expected to experience highs of 8°C on Sunday, and then climb to 11°C on both Monday and Tuesday. Greater Manchester may see temperatures hitting 10°C on Sunday and Monday, and 8°C on Tuesday. In contrast, Madrid’s forecast shows highs of just 8°C for Sunday and Monday, rising slightly to 9°C on Tuesday, according to the Met Office.
Impact of Storm Goretti
Storm Goretti has caused significant disruption, highlighted by a tragic incident in the Mawgan area of Helston, where a man in his 50s lost his life when a tree fell on his caravan. The storm’s aftereffects are still being felt, and there are ongoing warnings in place.
Warnings Currently in Effect
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow, particularly for central and northeastern Scotland, effective Sunday. This warning covers regions such as Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, and Highland, with forecasts suggesting heavy and persistent snowfall, leading to considerable accumulations and potential disruptions.
A wider yellow warning has also been raised for challenging weather conditions, including snow, rain, and ice, affecting large areas across the country over the weekend. This includes parts of Scotland, the East and West Midlands, north-eastern and north-western England, as well as Yorkshire on Sunday.
Weather Predictions Going Forward
According to Dr Chris England, a weather producer at Sky, milder conditions are expected due to southerly winds, which will bring an end to the ongoing cold spell. He noted that while snow will initially impact regions in the north and east, it is predicted to transition into rain as temperatures rise.
However, the transition may lead to localized flooding primarily in Scotland, as the combination of melting snow and heavy rainfall could overwhelm local drainage systems.
Background
Extreme winter weather events have become increasingly common in recent years across the UK, leading to the implementation of various weather warnings from the Met Office. As storms continue to affect travel and daily life, understanding these weather patterns is vital for public safety and preparedness.
