NHS Trusts in Nottinghamshire Declare Critical Incidents Amid Severe Strain
Two hospital trusts in Nottinghamshire have announced critical incidents due to overwhelming pressure on their services. Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have reported significant delays and operational challenges related to rising patient demand and staff shortages.
Operational Pressures Reported
NUH cited an increase in demand exacerbated by winter illnesses and high rates of staff absence since the Christmas period. Consequently, the trust has urged the public to seek care at its Accident and Emergency (A&E) department only in cases of true emergencies or serious accidents.
Similarly, Sherwood Forest Hospitals has indicated that it is facing sustained pressure across its facilities, primarily due to ongoing difficulties with patient discharges, which hampers their ability to admit new patients.

This announcement follows similar critical incident declarations from four hospitals in southeast England, where trusts have been overwhelmed by a marked increase in complex A&E cases. Notable among these are the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust and East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, which have also reported extreme pressure on their resources.
Recent reports indicate that hospitals in Birmingham, Staffordshire, and regions across Wales have been confronted with similar challenges, which reflects a widespread issue facing the NHS.

Andrew Hall, the Chief Operating Officer at NUH, explained the necessity of declaring a critical incident, stating that current demands on hospital services greatly exceed their capacity. He expressed regret for the negative experiences patients are facing and implored the public to treat staff with understanding during this challenging time.
At the Queen’s Medical Centre, designed to handle around 350 patients daily, actual patient numbers have surged to over 500, marking an alarming 43% increase. On one record day, the facility treated 550 patients.

In light of this situation, the NUH has outlined several measures aimed at alleviating pressure on its services. These include postponing certain elective procedures, utilising all available beds, reallocating staff, and coordinating with NHS colleagues to expedite patient discharges.
